OBJECTIVE: This course will provide you with information on the new OSHA 1910.134 standard. What OSHA is looking for in Fire Departments and what you need to do for training, equipment, written respiratory programs and other compliance issues.

161 Relief Association Management - Investments and Bylaws - 4 Hour

FOR: All Relief Association Personnel

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this interactive course is to introduce new relief association trustees (e.g. firefighters and municipal) to the basics of operating the relief association pension plan. Bylaws (bylaws, pension document and forms)

859 Thermal Imaging Units - 4 Hours

FOR: All fire service personnel

OBJECTIVE: There has been many new devices introduced over the last few years and this course will focus on the newest thermal image units on the market today. The highlights of this class will be on how to use the units and tips on what tactics work best when using such a device during an incident.

OBJECTIVE: This class starts by addressing the chronology of rescue operations, immediate scene considerations and size up. It covers the many different search operations that we experience on a regular basis such as search in a single family dwelling, industrial occupancies to hospitals and schools. Also covers basic rope search tips and techniques. Primarily classroom this class does offer some hands on.

OBJECTIVE: This course will provide you with the OSHA inspection process. What OSHA is looking for in Fire Departments; organizational statement, training, equipment, written programs, frequently cited standards etc. OSHA Inspection Priorities, selection process, OSHA Inspection Processes, opening conference, walk-around inspection, closing conference, OSHA Inspection Results, citations, penalties and contested findings.

182 Top Ten Fire Scene Mistakes and How to avoid them - 4 hours

FOR: All Emergency Response Personnel

OBJECTIVE: Every year, over 100 fire fighters are killed and scores more are injured on the fireground. Interestingly, virtually every one of these deaths or injuries can be placed into ten categories that best be described as common mistakes. This class will overview these “top ten” fire scene mistakes and will offer solutions to reducing these common problems.

185 Fire Alarm Panels - 4 Hours

OBJECTIVE: After completing this course, the student will be able to identify and properly operate various public alerting systems, list the basic information about public alerting systems, select from a list functions performed by private alarm signaling devices, select facts about private alarm signaling and initiating devices, identify alarm initiating devices, list methods of alerting fire department personnel, describe types of fire alarm signaling systems. This course will satisfy the age old question “The alarm is sounding now what do I do”.

160 Relief Association Management - New Officers & Trustees - 4 Hour

OBJECTIVE: An overview of relief association operation for the new and veteran trustees. Topics include an overview of the functions and purpose of fire service relief associations, their bylaws and a review of state laws that pertain to pensions. All trustees are obligated to act in a prudent and fiduciary manner, this course will assist you in ensuring you are qualified to act in that capacity.

730 Overview of the MN Fire Code - 4 hours

FOR: All Fire Service Personnel

OBJECTIVE: Effective on or about April 1, 2007 the State of Minnesota adopted a new state fire code known as the 2007 Minnesota State Fire Code (MSFC). The MSFC is based on the 2006 Edition of the International Fire Code (IFC), and includes amendments specific to it's enforcement in Minnesota. The companion State Building Code (2006 International Building Code (IBC) and amendments), is planned for adoption at the same time. This course is designed to provide an overview of the codes and their relationship.

OBJECTIVE: This course is designed to give the student the knowledge to perform monitoring activities at a structural fire, a strange odor call, or a minor Hazardous Materials Incident. We will discuss the limitations/strengths of the instrument, how to interpret the readings, how to calibrate/maintain the instrument, and learn to use the instrument to increase safety for the responder. Please bring your direct read instrument to class to learn how to use it to it’s potential.

OBJECTIVE: This course will be an overview of the Fire House Software. It will cover the different things that can benefit your department’s record keeping. Records on training, truck maintenance, run attendance and many more will be covered. Bring your questions and get the best of your Fire House software.

686 Vehicle Extrication in the 21st Century - 4 hours

FOR: All Fire Service Personnel

OBJECTIVE: Improvements in automobile design and safety in recent years have made it increasingly difficult for rescue personnel to stay current with the latest in automotive technologies. The same features that make occupants safer create additional challenges for responders. This presentation addresses automobile frame construction, supplemental restraint systems, side impact reinforcement bars, new body materials, and hybrid and alternative fueled vehicles.

OBJECTIVE: This course is designed to acquaint first responders with the basic operation of global positioning systems G.P.S. units and their potential in fire, rescue and EMS operations.

1720 Wildland Fire Fighting - Mutual Aid from DNR Forestry - 4 Hours

FOR: All Fire Service Personnel and officers that respond to wildland fires.

OBJECTIVE: To familiarize agencies and individuals that respond to wildfires that may also involve DNR-Forestry with Forestry resource availabilities, capabilities and limitations, how to obtain those resources both before and during a wildfire; how to use these resources on a wildfire; how Forestry can support the Incident Commander at small to large scale incidents; how to get wildfire cause investigation assistance.

1719 Wildland Fire Fighting - Strategy and Tactics - 4 Hours

FOR: All Fire Service Personnel and officers that respond to wildland fires.

OBJECTIVE: A brief overview of wildland fire behavior, wildfire management strategy, tactical applications for those strategies, and wildland fire case studies.

110 Fire Ground Management - First Arriving Officer - 8 Hours

FOR: Fire Chiefs, Company Officers

OBJECTIVE: This course will develop company officers' incident scene supervisory and management capabilities in structural fire operations. Key content includes discussion and scenario based practice on controlling and implementing the activities that need to be done to successfully deal with personnel performing the following operations; rescue and ventilation, confinement and extinguishment, water supply, exposures and defensive operations, and salvage, overhaul and support. If your incidents seem to run themselves and you’re not in control then this course is for you.

141 Preparing Standard Operating Guidelines - S.O.G.’s - 8 Hours

FOR: All Fire Service Personnel

OBJECTIVE: Understanding the need and liabilities for standard operating guidelines. Developing and reviewing departmental SOGs for administration and emergency operations such as, strategic, tactical, and hazardous material applications. Students are welcome to bring rough drafts, examples, of your departments SOGs.

304 Emergency Vehicle Operations Decision Driving Course - 8 Hours

MESSAGE: Bring Turnout Gear and Vehicle to drive

FOR: All Emergency Service Personnel

OBJECTIVE: To acquaint drivers in a classroom setting with Minnesota Statutes pertaining to the operation of emergency vehicles, physical forces and conditions that will influence vehicle operations, route selection on responses and vehicle inspections. This course will also discuss personal vehicle conditions and operations when responding to alarms. To set up a relatively simple and inexpensive course which operators can experience handling of emergency vehicles during various driving maneuvers at lower speeds. Each student will have 1.5 hours using a state of the art driving simulator.

983 Mass Decontamination Techniques - 8 hours

For all Fire and EMS personnel that Respond to Haz-Mat Spills
Objective: This course will teach the participant the basic steps for setting up a decontamination area and a safe appropriate response to a Hazardous Materials Incident. To prepare the student for this task this class will cover the MN options and resource information for decontamination procedures and basic contamination alternatives.

1702 Wildland Fire "Standards for Survival - Refresher Course" - 8 Hours

FOR: All Wildland Fire Fighters that have taken the S-190, S-130 courses and wish to recertify for the up coming year.

OBJECTIVE: This course is the refresher course for the wildland fire fighters to get recertified for their "Red Card". The course follows the guidelines set up by the Minnesota DNR and The Federal Forest Service. The fire fighter will still need to get their physical test done by their agency. The course will cover safety issues, the "18 Watch out Situations", the "10 Fire Orders" and "Fire Shelters".

119* Incident Safety Officer (ISO)- 12 Hours

FOR: Officers, Safety Officers and Future Officers This is a National Fire Academy Course.

OBJECTIVE: This National Fire Academy course examines the Safety Officer’s role at emergency response situations. A specific focus on operations within an incident command system as a Safety Officer is the main theme. The participant will be able to identity and analyze safety concerns as they relate to all-hazards scene evaluation, and communicate recommended solutions to the command authority. Persons attending this course should have a working knowledge of the Incident Command System as taught by the National Fire Academy, building construction principles, hazardous materials management, applicable NFPA guidelines, and Federal regulations.

131* Leadership III = Strategies for Supervisory Success - 12 Hours

(Situational Leadership, Delegating, Coaching, Discipline)

FOR: All Fire Service Personnel This is a National Fire Academy Course.

OBJECTIVE: This National Fire Academy course provides the company officer with the basic leadership skills and tools needed to perform effectively in the fire service environment. This course covers when and how to do the following: delegate to subordinates, assess personal leadership styles through situational leadership, discipline subordinates, and apply coaching/motivating techniques.

157* Emergency Response to Terrorism: Tactical Consideration (ERT:TC-CO) - 12 Hours

SPECIAL PREREQUISITES: Must working knowledge of Incident Command System (ICS).

FOR: All Emergency Service first-on-scene Personnel This is a National Fire Academy Course.

OBJECTIVE: This course is designed to build on existing knowledge and skills of the first responder supervisor from the Emergency Response to Terrorism Basic Concepts course. The students will be trained in security considerations, identifying signs of terrorism, anticipating unusual response circumstances, assessing information and initiating self-protection actions. Designed to provide the student with defensive considerations (biological, nuclear, incendiary, chemical, and explosive), as well as command and control issues associated with criminal incidents.

302 Aerial Apparatus Operations - 12 Hours

MESSAGE: Bring Full Turnout Gear

FOR: Firefighters who will operate elevated apparatus.

OBJECTIVES: Truck Maintenance: Students will learn preventive maintenance and keeping reports and records of maintenance. Truck Operations: Students will learn efficient operations of elevated apparatus and the difference between ladders versus platforms; also hands-on field operations. Truck Company Support on the Fire Ground: Students will learn the responsibilities of the truck company while on the fire ground. Hands-on Elevated Apparatus Evolutions.

303 Basic Fire Pump Operations - 12 Hours

MESSAGE: Full turn out gear required on Sunday morning.

FOR: Firefighter/Fire Apparatus Operators.

OBJECTIVE: Introduces students to fire pump theory inside and out, proper use of pump parts and accessories (staging valve, relief valve, primer, road/pump shift, etc.) Introduces students to fundamentals of hydraulics, water supplies, water flows, and hydraulic terms. Introduces student to preventive maintenance, proper operations, reports, and record keeping. Fire Ground Hydraulics: Hands On Evolutions: Drafting and Water Jetting, Pre-connected Hose Lays, Valves (Long/Short Hose Lay Simultaneous), Staging and/or Transfer Valve Capacity Pumping.

306 Fire Apparatus Maintenance - 8 Hours

MESSAGE: Wear coveralls or suitable clothing.

FOR: Anyone who may be maintaining fire vehicles on a regular basis or needs to do minor maintenance in the field.

OBJECTIVE: This class will cover preventive maintenance on power trains, pumps and the apparatus itself. How to do minor maintenance in the shop and in the field. This class will also cover how to do a proper safety inspection of such things as brakes, etc.

458 Preparation for Initial Company Operations (PICO)

Formerly Managing Company Tactical Operations: Preparation)

FOR: Fire Chiefs, Company Officers This is a National Fire Academy Course

OBJECTIVE: This course is designed for Company Officer’s, acting Company Officer’s, or senior firefighters responsible for the management of a single fire company at an emergency incident, and those officers who are responsible for company readiness, personnel safety, and leadership as it relates to company operation.

600 Basic Auto Extrication - 12 Hours

MESSAGE: Bring Protective Clothing and Eye Protection.

FOR: All Fire and Rescue Personnel

OBJECTIVE: Learn about “new” extrication tools, hydraulic equipment, tools and techniques from instructors with international exposure. Covered in the classroom is safety and correct tool handling. An important segment of this class is an extensive hands-on skills practice utilizing realistic scenarios. Learn vehicle stabilization, basic and advanced extrication techniques, new vehicle features and patient care during extrication.

702 Arson Detection For The First Responder (ADFR)- 12 Hours

FOR: All Fire Service Personnel This is a National Fire Academy Course.

OBJECTIVE: This course is designed specifically to provide a clear definition of the role of initial responder organizations, and to provide essential knowledge to enable them to recognize the potential of an intentionally set fire, preserve evidence, and properly report the information to appropriate officials. The course includes the following basic topics; fire behavior, critical observations of the first responder, fire cause; scene security and evidence preservation; legal considerations; and reporting findings.

1214 Special Rescue - Off Road -Snowmobiles, ATV’s, GPS, Low Angle - 12 Hours

MESSAGE: Bring Full Turnout Gear

FOR: All Fire Service Personnel

OBJECTIVE: This twelve-hour course will introduce the participant to preplanning for off road emergencies and the student will participate in victim assessment, packaging, transportation, low angle recovery evolutions as they pertain to off road situations. An EMS background will be helpful during this class. The participants should dress to be active outside both days. Course topics will include, field trauma assessments, emergency care and patient packaging tailored to remote applications.
